Down with Dilution – League of Honest Coffee Lovers

Friday, April 1st, 2011

I love coffee. So when I stumbled onto this Life Magazine ad from April 1960, I couldn’t help but to pause for observation. “Down with Dilution” Hell yeah, I’m all about that. I assumed the quality of coffee in 60′ sucked. Then after a closer look, this ad seemed like the perfect mantra for the birth of Starbucks. Maybe the founder actually read this. My guess is people didn’t care much about proper measurement, consistent timing and NEVER letting the coffee boil. They were too worried youth of America becoming hippies.

Thanks Pan-American Coffee Bureau.

Family Photos and Blurb

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

On Facebook yesterday, I posted an image of my Grandmother Astrid Strom Kelly from a book I’m publishing on Blurb, and received quite a few comments. So, here’s one of the pages from the book to share. My grandfather assembled this book in the mid 20th century. The images are from late 1880’s and early 1900’s, these feature the ships that my great/grand parents traveled on from Norway.

focus2 and Stewart Cohen received a Platinum Award at the 2010 Creativity Awards, for our recently published book, Identity: A Photographic Meditation from the Inside Out by Stewart Cohen. And with the recent passing of my good friend, copywriter hero Bill Baldwin, who was the writer for Identity among hundreds of past projects, this award seems even more appropriate. Congrats to Stewart, Bill, Zach, and all the people that helped this project become a reality.

Lost and Found

This incense package I ran across reminded me of day before computers. Need packaging artwork? Well just draw it, typography too. As crude as it looks, I have an appreciation for it. Did the fonts just come to mind? Or did the artist have a font specimen book to reference from? Maybe a little of both. With today’s incredible desktop publishing tools all at our fingertips, I admire the pure and honest approach to adorning a product with graphics. Cheers to the mighty pencil!

Identity Book by Stewart Cohen

Identity: A Photographic Meditation from the Iside Out

This recently published book project for Stewart Cohen was truly a labor of love. Stewart came to me 4 years ago and asked me if I’d be interested in designing a book concept he had been creating images for. The idea was to shoot interesting people throughout his extensive travels and ask them to write a brief note describing what life means to them. He shared some of the subjects photos and quotes with me, and that was it, I was sold. My reply? Let’s do it.

I created some preliminary concepts, title ideas, and did a first round of image picks. Presented to Stewart and he loved the directions. From that point, not much happened with it. Stewart and I got busy with projects, and pushed it to the side. In hindsight this was a good thing, because Stewart continued to shoot new subjects and we edited our picks over and over again. The result was a much better selection of subjects for the book.

Then, last summer Stewart called me and said, “let’s make it happen, let’s self-publish it”. So we revisited the design, finalized the subjects to be included and costed out the printing. Which, 4 years later was 50% lower than previous bids. That’s telling of how the printing industry has been radically effected by the recession.

And finally, a few weeks ago this baby was released at an exhibit and book signing event at Photos Do Not Bend Gallery in Dallas, TX—setting record attendance and book sales for a single show. Although this was one of the longest projects I can recollect, I’m glad to have saw it to its completion, and proud of the result.
